Kevin L. Butts for Sheriff | |
About Kevin: Kevin L. Butts, the kind of experience we want in the Sheriff's office. Kevin has been serving Sherman County since July 1994 and is one of the longest tenured local law enforcement officers in the county. Kevin's law enforcement roots date back to mid 1994 when 29-year-old Kevin was hired as Deputy reserve by long time Sheriff Jack Armstrong. A stranger to law enforcement but not to leadership Kevin quickly rose up the ranks of the reserves, and within 3 months of being hired he was elected by his fellow reserve officers to vice president. It didnt take Kevin long to develop a reputation for his fair and balanced leadership approach and one year after being elected by his peers was promoted to the rank of president of the reserves which he held until he was promoted to a full time deputy. Kevin served as a part-time and reserve officer until 1997 when Sheriff Douglas Whitson promoted him to Full-time and Kevin was sent to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. Kevin served the citizens of Sherman County until his leadership was called upon again in 2000 when Sheriff Douglas Whitson promoted him to the second highest position in the office, Undersheriff. For the last four years Kevin has served the citizens of Sherman County as Undersheriff becoming one of the most decorated law enforcement officers in the county. Kevins accomplishments are too numerous to list here, but his career pinnacle came in October 2001 when in the course of a long and deadly chase Kevin was injured in the line of duty when a suspect drug him along his car as he tried to disarm the suspect from the vehicle he had used as a weapon against other officers and Sherman County residents. The chase ended with the valiant efforts of Kevin the KHP Troopers, Sherman County Deputies and the Goodland Police Department. For his efforts Kevin received the highest award given to a living law enforcement officer the K.A.C.P Gold Award for Police Service. This award is second only to giving your life to the service of your community. So as you can see, Kevin L. Butts has had a long and service filled career, he asks for your vote in November to give Sherman County a fresh start in law enforcement. Kevin's Ideas: Kevin's tenure at the Sherman County Sheriff's office has given him the opportunity to see what ideas will work and what needs changed. He brings many fresh ideas to the table, one of which is the need for a more open and free department. Kevin wants everyone to feel comfortable with the Sheriff's Department; he plans to open the office up for regular tours to show the community what takes place at the Sheriffs office. Kevin knows that the key to effective law enforcement is community involvement; he wants to make his deputies more noticeable in the community by having them attend more community functions to meet with the people to hear their concerns. Kevin plans a modernization in the department, staying within his budget he plans to update old equipment and plan more for the future. New uniforms are in order as well as the addition of a part-time patrol deputy for the night shifts for busy times. Better budget planning and more forward thinking would all be staples of a Kevin Butts run department, he asks for your vote in November |
